CREATION SCIENCE MESSAGES
NUMBER 24
WATER

There are only two options for the origin of the universe. Either God created all things ex nihilo (out of nothing) or matter is eternal. If God created, then the universe should show much evidence of omnipotence and omniscience that cannot be explained by purposeless forces. If matter is eternal, and there is no director (God), then the universe should show mostly evidence of undirected effects caused by blind purposeless chance.

One of the greatest creation scriptures is Romans 1:20 -"For the invisible things of Him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they (unbelievers) are without excuse".

Water has been determined to be two parts hydrogen and one part oxygen. Water has been proven to be present only on earth. Water is a vital major substance necessary in all life processes both plant and animal. Water is known in chemistry as the universal solvent, because everything is at least partially soluble in water. Water seems to be unique to our planet. Water is the most abundant of all chemical compounds on the surface of the earth. The total surface of the globe is about 197,000,000 sq. mi., and of this approximately 71%, or 140,000,000 sq. mi., is water.

Water is essential to life, and it constitutes more than 50 % by weight of every living plant and animal. Our bodies are approximately 70 % water. Many of the foods we eat are composed primarily of water. Tomatoes are 95%; milk 87%; beef, from 60% to 68% water. Pure water is odorless and tasteless. Under atmospheric pressure, at sea level, water boils at 100o C. (212o F.) and freezes at 0o C. (32o F.)

If we gradually cool a container of water, its volume becomes smaller and smaller until a temperature of 4o C. is reached. Then, as the temperature is further lowered, the water begins to expand and continues to expand until, at 0o C., the liquid water changes to ice. This peculiar expansion of water when it changes to ice causes the ice to float. This expansion causes the bursting of water pipes in winter and the splitting of huge boulders when ice forms in cracks in the rock. You have seen the signs to beware of falling rock along the highway. Nearly all liquids except water continue to contract as they approach their freezing points, and they contract also during the process of crystallizing. When they freeze, the crystals sink to the bottom of the container. If water behaved in this way, the ice formed in lakes and rivers would settle to the bottom and the entire volume of water would become solid. Fish and other forms of aquatic life would not survive under these conditions. Did this property of water happen by chance? Refer back to Romams 1:20 and decide for yourself.

In order to understand this next property of water, think of a teaspoon as holding approximately 5cc. or 5 grams of water. When water is heated the temperature gradually rises until it reaches 100o C (212os F.) and then it boils. Higher heat will not raise the temperature of the water, but will only make the water boil faster. It requires one calorie of heat to raise each cc. of water 1 degree in temperature until you get to 100o C., then it takes 539 calories at 100o C. to make 1cc.of water go into the vapor state. This huge quantity of heat is known scientifically as the heat of vaporization of water. It is easy to see that water thus becomes a huge reservoir for the absorption of excess heat from the sun, it also shows why the evaporation of our perspiration is such a wonderful cooling process for our bodies. Did this marvelous property of water happen by chance? Refer back to Romans 1:20 and decide for yourself.

Now think of the above process in reverse and you can see that cooling one cc. of water by taking out one calorie of heat from the water will lower the temperature by 1 degree for each calorie removed. This remains true until the temperature of the water gets down to 0o C. (32o F.) At this temperature of 0o we must remove 79 calories of heat from the 1cc. of water to cause it to solidify into ice. This is known scientifically as the heat of fusion of ice. Thus you see we again have a huge reservoir to prevent the excessive cooling of our planet. Did this peculiar marvelous property of water happen without plan and design? Refer back to Romans 1:20 and decide for yourself.

The average local thunder storm drops about 100,000 tons of water on the earth. This rain is essentially pure distilled water except for what it might have dissolved from the atmosphere.
